Minimum Wages for Tipped Employees

Props to a commenter for this card from TheChive.com

U.S. Department of Labor - Minimum Wages for Tipped Employees

You want to know why servers bitch about tight cocksuckers who don't tip.  Click that link above & compare it to what you make.  Yes, we make tips.  But if you fuck us over, we don't.  We make less than minimum wage you cheap self-centered bastard.  Have one less chardonnay grandma & leave a living wage tip.  Quit rolling up so hard on the Hennessy & hemp and leave us something other than your putrid stench and your anti-social behavior.

A tip is for blah blah blah good service.  I get that.  I give great service, I'm not some incompetent meth head or baked out of my mind stoner.  I bathe regularly.  I bring you what you order, and fix what my co-workers fuck up.  When something goes wrong, I make it right.  When you dine with me, you won't have a bad experience because of me.  And if you do have a problem with me I encourage you to share that with a manager & leave me nothing.  But I know that won't happen.

I'm not god's gift to waitering, but I'm damn good at what I do and I take pride in my job, even if it is just a half step above the tranny-boys who are polishing knobs under the bridge for cash.  I suck up - they suck off, but sometimes it feels almost the same.

Question...In my store (a C.G.) they are having us run food (aka a food runner) for 2.13 an hour plus , hopefully, tips. Do u guys do that? do u clock in as a server and not have any table of your own to make tips on. I don't know it just feels wrong. Is this how it is in all Darden stores?

I'm not sure how often this practice is used, but yes, we've had it in our store.

We've used it for big rush holidays mostly. We tried it (briefly) for other high volume times, but that didn't last.

My experience from those who've had these shifts (I've never had one) is that they are paid the minimum wage & are tipped. In our store they've been very desirable shifts because while they made less money - they were able to get in and out quickly on a holiday shift and still take something home that was reasonable. All depends on your fellow workers, so if they all hate you, you're screwed.

So my issue is this , we are only getting 2.13, are u guys getting more? It's not the shift really, it's the pay? ps- what do u tip out ur runners anyway?

As someone who has been in a store that corporate came in to straighten this issue up, a food runner is suppose to clock in for minimum wage (not serving minimum of 2.13) but at least for server training. Corporate, and managers, are not allowed to encourage tip out from servers, but all three stores I have been in have done it this way.

My first store would tip out the food walker anywhere from 10-20 bucks a person. Now, I am in a lower income town that tips out 3-8 on average, and some of us tipping 10+. They clock in around 6 to run food until the rush dies down (usually around 9) so they make about 80-120 from servers, plus 7 something an hour, so you make good money.

Corporate folks have actually encouraged food walkers as a reward and merit based position. Highest alcohol sales or highest add ons will get Friday night food walker position.

Ultimately, what I am getting at, is if corporate knew your food walkers were getting 2.13 an hour, there would be some heads rolling and positions on the line.

Hope that clears things up.

Nope, this came straight from corprate!!!They told us it was legal and if we don't like it we can leave :( I love the people I work with and don't want to work anywhere else!!! Help!Do I have any recourse at all?!!?m If I got $7. per hour I would be fine but it feels like I am being exploited and that sucks!

Very funny post! I was laughing at loud as I read it. I feel your pain and I love your site. I am going to add you to my blogroll at Tales From A Bar when I get off work tonight. Wondering if you can return the favor when you get a chance?
